When we agreed to foster River, we knew that she needed to be spayed and that she was heart worm positive. This is our first heart worm positive foster, so we have done our best to educate ourselves in preparation for keeping her safe on her road to being fully healthy for her new family. With all of the state restrictions, these treatments unfortunately couldn't start until this past Wednesday. Good news, she already WAS spayed! The vets caught glimpse of a teeny tiny scar prior to surgery and with ultrasound confirmed that she was already spayed, so that was a great relief that she didn't have to endure a surgery and an itchy incision. With that procedure out of the way, it was decided that she would start her heart worm treatment immediately. She was visibly uncomfortable when we picked her up from the vet, and was very groggy most of the next day, but pain pills made her much more comfortable. She is already looking and feeling so much better. She will get another round of injections in one month, so until then, exercise needs to be restricted. I can already see her longing for a walk, but not for now. We'll be sure to keep her safe, spoil her, pamper her, and give her all the enrichment we can in the mean time. Her prognosis is good and she is such a tough cookie. We love her so much and I can't wait to see how happy she makes her future family. |
