Wrigley and Yankee are the last two puppies of Comerica's litter that are up for adoption. If you or anyone you know are interested, please visit Detroit Dog Rescue to fill out an adoption application.
I know our time will be winding down soon with these guys. We have had the pleasure of fostering five of the nine pups in this litter. Each came with their own demeanor and sweetness and the past few weeks have been busy, tiring, and lots of fun.
I am a school teacher, so I only can commit to fostering puppies in the summer months when my schedule allows. They require lots of time, attention, and frequent bathroom breaks during the night. Giving them what they need has forced me to slow down, which I think we all need sometimes. But how do you give them away? Don't you get attached? Of course we love these little babies and they have brought us so much laughter and "awwwwww" moments. But we know at this phase in our life, we do not have the time to commit months training and caring for a new puppy. We also know that if we adopt now, our ability to foster more DDR dogs will be limited. If you are an animal lover and aren't ready to commit to the decade plus long commitment of owning a dog, I strongly encourage you to try to foster. In the case of these puppies, you can get your "puppy fix", breathe all that intoxicating puppy dog breath, and snuggle for hours and hours. Puppies are highly desired and are usually adopted within days to a few weeks. When you foster puppies, be prepared to be very popular. Neighbors, friends, family... we have had so many visitors in the past few weeks. Pro tip: Let your guests tire the puppies out so you can enjoy their sweet snuggles afterwards. For older dogs, your role as a foster is to get them out of the shelter environment and acclimate them to a home environment. Some may need help with leash walking, potty training, or learning to not be afraid of other people, sounds, or unfamiliar situations. In either case, your time fostering helps prepare these dogs for their forever home and the information you can share with DDR about their temperament and personality can help the adoption coordinator find the home that would be the best fit. Yes, fostering is work, but DDR will support you with supplies and resources. All you really need is time and attention to give to these dogs. When we say goodbye, yes, it is sad, but when you know that the joy they brought you will now be experienced by another family, that is a pretty amazing feeling. We know another foster will always be waiting for us to help them on their journey. If you become a "foster failure" and you end up adopting the dog you just can't say goodbye to, that's ok too. We are so thankful that fostering led us to meeting our sweet Jackie girl. Our lives became better when she arrived. Oriole was adopted by a great family today so we brought home Yankee from the adoption event. Compared to Oriole, he is a little peanut. He is spunky! I love watching him zoom around the yard. He runs with his mouth open so it always looks like he is smiling. Yankee is our 17th foster. Before him and Oriole, we have not fostered any brindle dogs and now I think it is such a pretty coloring. Yankee just melts in to you when he snuggles and he loves playing with toys and tennis balls. At seven weeks old, he has also already nailed the "puppy eye" look.
My readers... this is what fostering looks like. Yes, puppies and fosters of all ages are a lot of work, but it is sprinkled with tons of sweet moments like this. So rewarding and one of the best ways to volunteer if you are an animal lover. Put your passion in to action.
Welcome the giant of the litter. While most of his siblings are weighing in at 10 pounds of less, this hippo is weighing in at 13 pounds. His paws are huge. His daddy is a mastiff, so we think he'll be a big boy too. He has a very sweet disposition. He likes being with Wrigley, but also likes some chill time sleeping by himself. He whines a bit in his crate a night but calms down after a few minutes. Can we also talk about those blue eyes?!?! My goodness, what a handsome boy. Chase wasn't phased by the adoption of Dodger and is having fun with his brother Wrigley. Wrigley and Chase are snuggly so we are enjoying every minute we have with them. I am obsessed with Wrigley's wrinkles and fat puppy tummy. Chase has such a handsome face with the different shades of browns and blacks.
With on opening in our home left when Dodger was adopted, we welcomed Wrigley to our team. I love his pretty eyes, fat puppy tummy, and wrinkles!
It's been awhile since we've fostered puppies and we are enjoying the energy they bring. They are so curious and cuddly. They spend the day alternating between play time, a little bit of yard time, and snuggling with their big foster sister, Jackie. My niece and nephew have been a big help and enjoy helping me take care of the puppies. Fostering is such a great way to teach children compassion and expose them to the rewards of volunteering your time and talents. |
