Great news!!! Copper has been adopted by THE BEST family. So happy for him.
Copper is getting neutered tomorrow and will likely be in his new home next week, so it was time for a bath. Overall, he did ok. At first, the peanut butter helped distract him, but about half way through he was whining. When we both started petting him, he was ok again. Bathing him is definitely a team effort, but overall he did great!
And of course, bath time would not be complete without some post bath crazies!!! :) Last week when I had to take Copper to the vet for his check up, I noticed he was VERY eager to hop out of the car when I exited. He even jumped over me to try to exit as soon as possible to explore the new place we had just traveled. We tried to work on some training with the car parked in the backyard. Our goal was to be able to have the door wide open and have him wait for permission to exit. Here is some of our progress. We've also been practicing this skill anytime he transitions from one space to another (leaving our house to go to the yard or when opening the gate before starting our walk). We just want to make sure he isn't darting away if a door or gate is accidentally left open. We've been on walks in our neighborhood where someone didn't latch the door or gate and dogs have come out after us.... not fun, not safe! Here are a few attempts with treats to see if it made a difference. Still inconsistent but overall better. This skill still needs practice to keep him safe. With the colder weather and our early morning outings, walks with Copper are usually pretty quiet and I have good focus with him. On today's walk when I got home from work, the weather was warmer and more people and dogs were out. I noticed he was pulling a bit more than usual (which I tried to show in this video) when he heard sounds or saw someone.
Sun was shining but it was a cooooold walk today!!! I found an old coat to put on him. This belonged to our boxer boy, Milo, and was way too big, but with a safety pin to secure it, it did the trick!!! Copper is such a great little walker. I have not observed any reactivity and he doesn't pull. Lots of sniffing and peeing on things, but I have been enjoying our walks together a lot.
Copper continues to do a great job sleeping all throughout the night. He curls up at the foot of our bed and doesn't make a peep. In the morning though when he hears us starting to wake, he's been crawling up to us for some extra snuggles and pets. What a sweet way to start the morning. His new family will be so spolied with his love.
