Last week when I had to take Copper to the vet for his check up, I noticed he was VERY eager to hop out of the car when I exited. He even jumped over me to try to exit as soon as possible to explore the new place we had just traveled. We tried to work on some training with the car parked in the backyard. Our goal was to be able to have the door wide open and have him wait for permission to exit. Here is some of our progress.
We've also been practicing this skill anytime he transitions from one space to another (leaving our house to go to the yard or when opening the gate before starting our walk). We just want to make sure he isn't darting away if a door or gate is accidentally left open.
We've been on walks in our neighborhood where someone didn't latch the door or gate and dogs have come out after us.... not fun, not safe!

Here are a few attempts with treats to see if it made a difference. Still inconsistent but overall better.
This skill still needs practice to keep him safe.
